Host your own coffee tasting
Choosing a great coffee to enjoy at home or share with friends doesn’t have to be intimidating. In fact, hosting a coffee tasting is a fun way to explore the world of coffee. You’ll quickly become familiar with tasting terms and discover your favorite blends. Here a few tips to get you started.
Drop by your neighborhood Starbucks and pick up two bags of whole bean coffee.
Choose two single origin coffees. You might find it interesting to compare Black Apron Exclusives™ Lomas al Rio with another Latin America coffee, such us Guatemala Antigua or Colombia Narino Supremo.
Brew the two coffees simultaneously and taste them separately.
Coffee presses are the best way to do this. For tips on brewing great coffee, check the back of our coffee bags or ask your barista.
Begin by smelling the coffee’s aroma.
Much of what we taste is determined by what we smell. Put your nose close to the cup and inhale deeply. Describe the sensation in your own words. What food or other experience does it bring to mind?
When tasting the coffee, it’s important to slurp.
Don’t’s worry about etiquette here! Slurping spreads the coffee across the palate and allows the subtlest flavors and aromatics to reach your nose. As you taste the coffee, think about where the flavors land on your tongue. You may sense flavors on the tip, back on sides. The coffee may also feel light or heavy in weight.
Describe what you taste.
If you’re comparing Organic Lomas al Rio with another coffee from Latin America you’ll probably notice the pronounced juiciness of the Organic Lomas al Rio.
Cleanse your palate with water or salt-free crackers.
Begin again with the second coffee.
